OnePlus 8 Pro: Everything you need to know

OnePlus 8 Pro Specs, Price: OnePlus has launched next generation phones in an online event that was scheduled long ago, and the company chooses to respect reviewers & reporters’ health before business during pandemic situations. Now that we have the latest OnePlus 8 Pro packed with some serious hardware for gaming and daily power usage.

The real question is, whether it is suitable to replace 7th generation phones or stick to what we have for now? In this quick information guide, I will answer all questions and provide quick notes.

OnePlus 8 Pro

OnePlus 8 Pro Specifications

Flagship Processor

OnePlus 8 Pro Processor

OnePlus 8 Pro powered by Snapdragon 865, which is a flagship processor by Qualcomm. The latest Snapdragon X55 modem onboard is designed for 5G connectivity that supports SA and NSA 5G modes. Meanwhile, you have the fastest 12GB 12GB of LPDDR5 mobile RAM and have up to 256GB of storage based on UFS 3.0 technology. OnePlus managed to boost the performance and all thanks go to HPB (Host Performance Booster) technology.

Note: 5G connectivity won’t make any sense for the most of the countries because 4G is still being utilised by most of the Telecommunication companies, and I don’t see developing nations to set up 5G spectrums anytime soon. The on-going Telecommunication company debts in many countries are not creating positive vibes for 5G network establishment.

120Hz QHD + AMOLED Display

OnePlus 8 Pro shines with taller 6.78-inch QHD+ Fluid AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and 240Hz touch sampling rate. I want to point out this upgrade when compared to OnePlus 8 Pro that had a 90Hz 2K+ resolution panel.

The OnePlus management also reported that device owners can upscale 24FPS content to 120FPS for an immersive experience. Of course, the visual content won’t go on par with a higher frame rate video file, but it does eliminate choppiness in the video file.

The MEMC chip inside OnePlus supports modern applications such as VLC Media Player, MX Player, and other Chinese apps. Also, the MEMC chip supports streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime, YouTube, etc.

Quad-Camera Setup

OnePlus 8 Pro implemented minor improvements in the quad-camera setup. The primary camera sports 48MP (f/1.78) Sony IMX689 sensor that has already made its way to the market in the form of Oppo Find X2. The 48MP (f/2.2) Sony IMX586 sensor covers ultra-wide-angle with a 120-degree Field-of-view. You have an 8MP (f/2.4) telephoto lens that is capable of 30x digital zoom and 3x hybrid zoom. OnePlus introduced a colour filter camera that enables OnePlus 8 Pro to capture filtered photos.

The company stabilised the primary & telephoto camera optically (include OIS) to capture stunning videos. The dual-LED flash and laser autofocus work as advertised and no complaints here.

Speaking of Selfie Camera? OnePlus 8 Pro rocks 16 MP (f/2.5) that supports 1080p recording at 30FPS. Unfortunately, OnePlus needs to invest heavily in the front camera department because it lacks a flagship front camera knack.

IP Rating/Certification

The dust & water resistance certification is a notable feature on flagship phones, and OnePlus always ignored it to lower the manufacturing & selling cost. However, OnePlus 8 Pro is IP68 certified, which means that the phone can survive 1.5 meters of water up to 30 minutes. 8 Pro also won’t bow down to dust particles and will survive in the long run.

Battery

OnePlus 8 Pro Wireless Charger

OnePlus started to leave clues all over the internet before the release, so we were pretty much informed about the battery capacity and the contents. OnePlus 8 Pro powered by 4,510 mAh battery that comes with Warp Charge 30T wired fast-charger. The charging brick can juice up the battery from 0% to 100% within 70 minutes.

But, OnePlus should have introduced 50W fast-charger because they are charging a premium for the phone. Meanwhile, Realme X2 Pro launched 50W fast-charger at a much lesser price-point. I strongly believe that OnePlus is planning to add this minor upgrade to the T-edition coming by the end of the year.

Finally, OnePlus 8 Pro also supports wireless charging and it is a 30W fast-charger. Yes, you read it right, and you can charge the phone from 0% to 100% in 70 minutes using a wireless charger and that’s good news. However, you have to pay $70 for the wireless charger that supports reverse wireless charging. You can charge the phone, earbuds, smartwatches, and more.

Note: OnePlus wireless charging is a proprietary technology and universally it charges at 5W. In short, you cannot replace the primary wireless charger that juices up almost every device at home or office.

Connectivity

Both OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro packed with essential connectivity options. Starting with USB Type-C port (charging), Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.0, GALILEO (location services), Dual-band A-GPS, NFC (payments), and NavIC.

What’s missing?

Unfortunately, OnePlus mocked Apple for removing 3.5mm in iPhone 7 and later they followed the trend, the good old irony. The 3.5mm headphone jack is still missing, but the dual stereo speakers were improved for overall high-quality sound production.

New OxygenOS Features

OxygenOS 10 is the cleanest skin over the Android 10 mobile operating system. The 10th edition offers cleaner user-interface and intuitive features. I want to highlight some important features like Game Space, Smart Display, Wind Down, Block by Keywords, App Permissions and more. The highly optimised mobile operating system brings flagship performance and provides an optimal environment.

Colours, Price and Availability

OnePlus 8 Pro Colour Variants

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will be available from 14th April 2020. Currently, OnePlus announced two variants of 8 Pro in 3 colours:

  • 8GB RAM + 128GB base variant for $899
  • 12GB RAM + 256GB high-end variant for $999

OnePlus 8 Pro Colours:

  • Glacial Green
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Onyx Black

Bottom Line

OnePlus phone pricing increased drastically from the past two years, and $999 for the high-end variant is pretty premium pricing now. Most of the existing consumers purchased the phone because OnePlus was the flagship killer and the lower offered price. However OnePlus has finally delivered what a premium flagship phone should offer to it’s customers to justify the price. Let me know what you think about OnePlus 8 Pro in the comments section below.
